How does Colour Depth (Color Depth) or bit depth effect the appearance of an image?

Colour depth refers to the number of bits of computer memory needed to store colour information for an image.

• 1-bit allows monochrome or 2 colors. (black and white)

• 2-bit allows 4 colors.
• 4-bit allows 16 colors.
• 8-bit allows 256 colors.
• 16-bit allows 65,536 colors.
• 24-bit allows 16,777,216 colors.

The more bits there are, the more colours you can have

  Colour depth effects both still and video digital media. Sampling rate only effects video but not still media. Can you explain.

Sampling rate only affects video because there are many pictures, and audio to be sampled as samples per second, while still media doesn't have a sampling rate because there is only one picture (not multiple pictures per second)
